3 Reasons Why Pumpkin is Not Just Your Average Veggie

Excitement is in the air as the nights cool down and the days shorten, here in the beautiful Finger Lakes Region in Upstate New York.   Grape harvesting has started as well as many other crops of late summer and fall.  We couldn’t wait to pull out the Spiced Pumpkin Pie soap recipe and get some old fashioned fall fun going….pumpkin smashing!  Ok, maybe that’s just me.  Pumpkin, as it turns out, should not just be relegated to pie.  Did you know that pumpkin is great for the skin and:

  • Rich in beta carotene, or vitamin A.  Other natural sources from your diet are carrots, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, apricot, mango and melon just to name a few.  A diet rich in vitamin A is not only critical for healthy skin, it helps maintain eye health, supports the immune system and plays an important role in thyroid and adrenal synthesis.
  • Rich in alpha hydroxy acid, a natural exfoliant that helps the skin shed dead cells and encourages the growth of collagen and elastin.
  • Rich in anti-oxidants, the chemicals that fight free radical damage ( the attacks from pollution, refined foods etc), thus helping the skin look younger.
